SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS & SPECIAL EVENTS

Audience development and filmmaker development are the two pillars supporting the seminars, workshops and special events DIFF workshop programme. This year's events are again free, and most are open to the public. Activities include skills development programmes and discussion fora which offer a focus on film industry issues and a networking opportunity for all participants. DIFF sincerely thanks all contributors to the workshop programme.

STRATEGIC INITIATIVES National: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) will maintain a presence at the festival and will be available for meetings on application at the BAT Centre Festival Desk, or contact 031 260 2506/031 260 1704.

Provincial: The General Manager, Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (DACT), Mr Mnguni, invites comments/submissions on the role the Provincial Department could play in support of film and video in the province. NFVF Round Table with KZN Training Providers

The NFVF will meet with KZN training providers to unpack learner outcomes into occupational skills requirements. Provider participation will inform the current research towards better aligning skills development provision with industry. This session will be repeated with Producers on Friday. The NFVF will conduct a similar consultation with Producers to determine current and future industry skills needs. AVC Video Production Workshop

The Audio Visual Centre (UKZN) conducts an intensive 4-day Video Production Workshop for first timers from local community organisations. Now in its 6th year this workshop covers camera technique, composition, scripting and video editing and will be augmented with inputs by visiting filmmakers.

Stop-Frame Animation with ICEBOX

A two-part workshop covering the conceptual process of stop animation and a practical session covering the technical processes of creating animation. The practical session will involve each participant creating their own animation. Participation for the practical session is limited, so booking is essential.

A seminar with America The Beautiful' s protagonists; Gerren Taylor, teen-super-model; mother, Michelle Taylor and director Darryl Roberts. 2008 SABC INPUT Conference in South Africa

Special presentation and update ahead of next year's Input (In ternational Pu blic T elevision) Conference in Johannesburg . This event is the only international showcase that focuses specifically on the innovative programmes produced by public as opposed to commercial broadcasters. Input is a week long showcase where the rules of broadcasting are challenged and redefined. So You Want to be a Filmmaker?

An extensive introductory workshop for youth. Presented by the Women of the Sun. This workshop is an introduction to the industry particularly targeted at women who are exploring the possibility of entering the film and TV industry, but do not know where to start or how the industry works. 12:00 – 13:00 Basic Circuit Bending : Bleeps and sweeps aplenty as electro-acoustic artist Dean Henning (aka Captain Asthma) discusses and demonstrates how simple, low-cost technology (including toys) can be re-purposed for musical performance.

13:00 – 16:00 Aural Art – Creating Sonic Sculptures? : Richard Smith (aka Kliktrak) demonstrates the compositional and artistic creative technique of real time manipulation of audio hardware. Featuring a large setup of electronic hardware instrumentation, both analogue and digital, including the Jupiter 4, TB-303, TR727 and more. A must for musicians and gearheads.

Music Events Tickets are limited for the opening night film, early purchase is advised so as to gain access to the opening night party which features the Brian Thusiband. The closing night film includes the DIFF Awards and closing party with special guests the Omar Pene band from Senegal (their only performance in Durban ). Spanish duo Oreka Tx present live demos of the extraordinary Basque instrument the Txalapartha at the screenings of their film Nömadak TX (check page 68 for times). Their screening at Ekhaya on 24th is followed by a music workshop, with another workshop at the BAT Centre at 18h30 on 26th June. Oreka Tx also perform at the Wavescapes finale at the Bay of Plenty Lawns at 18h00 on 29th June. The Agape Orphanage Choir give special presentations at the various screenings of the film We are Together (Thina Simunye). The legendary Durban Film Office Youth in Film Music Concert takes place at the BAT Centre on 23rd June and features Prokid, Sliko, Oreka Tx and others. ICEBOX presents a workshop on “electronic music” on the 28th and after their screening on the 29th a party will take place at a nightclub venue to be announced soon. Saturday 30th is hip-hop day at KwaSuka Theatre with graffitiand music films, the Mr. Devious DVD launch, and live jams. Keep an ear open for other music events that will happen during DIFF.
